Title: The Danish Medicines Council’s use of the severity principle

The ‘severity principle’ is one of several principles used by the Danish Medicines Council when prioritising new medicines, but its application has been characterised by a lack of transparency and systematic approach. The report examines Danish practice and international experience with the use of the severity principle. On this basis, it is recommended to develop a Danish model clearly setting out how severity should influence prioritisation and willingness to pay.

Title: Productivity costs associated with migraine in Denmark
Migraine is a chronic neurological condition that affects labour-market-active individuals and leads to substantial productivity losses for society. This report describes the prevalent migraine population in Denmark and estimates the associated productivity loss, which amounts to up to DKK 1.6 billion annually. The findings highlight migraine as a relevant case for exploring the inclusion of productivity costs in health economic evaluations and for informing future prioritisation decisions in the Danish healthcare system.

Samfundsøkonomiske gevinster og risici ved afhospitalisering, 2024

    • Ehlers LH, Birch CR, Jensen MB, Justinusen J, Hansen JM, Bendsten L.

Title: Socio-economic benefits from dehospitalisations.
The number of patients receiving CGRP monoclonal antibody treatment is expected to increase markedly, putting pressure on hospital capacity and healthcare budgets. This report shows how a targeted dehospitalisation strategy, potentially shifting treatment and follow-up from hospital settings to primary care, can reduce waiting times, free up hospital resources, and generate cost savings, while improving access to care and treatment pathways for patients.
